Course Description
This popular QQI Accredited 10-week course will introduce you to the core principles of contemporary graphic design. Topics covered include design communication, image making and illustration, concept development, idea generation and digital applications. During the course, you will learn how to visualise your ideas, create engaging branding, develop an ability to creatively manage a project along with using the Adobe Suite to digitally realise your projects. Briefs are real-world and allow you to develop multiple concepts to present to our team, just as you would in a studio environment or if you were working with a client.

Course Content
This is an intensive course designed to give you solid introduction to contemporary design practice. You will attend two core classes (day or evening depending on the chosen mode of study), plus an online session on Saturday. This session is recorded so you can access in your own time. Additionally our part-time students can avail of Studio Support, giving you bookable time directly with lecturers outside of class time.
The Certificate Graphic Design Introduction offers the experience of studying design, and will help you to define individual creative ambitions through a primer programme of study. This 10-week course orientates you with a foundation in the core skills of contemporary design practice, framed around the discipline of design communications or graphic design. Awareness of industry and practice shapes the teaching. Briefs mirror real-world scenarios, at the same time creating space for you to develop enquiry and experiment. The emphasis is on studio practice. Exploring creative processes, testing practical techniques, building research, investigating theory, and how it links to projects.This is complemented by digital skills, that allow you to operate within modern studio environments.
Course Content
The aim of this module is to begin the development of visual literacy in relation to design. Through experimentation, analysis and investigation, the module introduces methods and strategies for the development of a design process that can accommodate and withstand future problem-solving needs.
The module aims to introduce you to a wide range of image making techniques and processes. These include, but are not limited to photography, various printmaking techniques, mark making, etching, lino and mono print. The emphasis is on experimentation and testing out new techniques to develop design solutions that assist in creative problem-solving using visuals as a means of expression.
You will digitally realise your design projects from he above modules in the Digital
Applications session. You will begin to realise your designs through the use of industry standard software (Adobe Suite) and hardware.
Admissions requirements
Applicants aged under 23 must have successfully completed the Leaving Certificate/a comparable secondary school examination, or hold another qualification at Level 5 or higher on the National Framework for Qualifications (NFQ). Mature applicants are welcome and highly valued at the Institute and can be admitted based on prior learning and work experience. We have a robust Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy in place to support mature learners. Language Requirements
We welcome international students to our courses. If English is not your first language, evidence of proficiency is required. This can be provided through the successful completion of a recognised English language test e.g. IELTS/TOEFL/Cambridge Exams/DET. In addition to language test results, the Institute also recognises language qualification by experience e.g., where an individual has been working or studying in English or in an English-speaking environment for a minimum of 12 months.
Certification
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the QQI-accredited Certificate in Graphic Design Introduction. This minor award/microcredential carries 20 ECTS credits and is a Level 6 qualification on Ireland’s National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). QQI is Ireland’s official state higher education awarding body.
Please note that a valid PPS (Personal Public Service) number is required by QQI for certification. Without a valid PPS number, certificates may not be issued.
Progression Options
Upon successful completion of this course Certificate in Graphic Design Introduction, you can progress on to the 1 Year Certificate in Graphic Design and/ the 3 Year BA Degree in Graphic Design. Students who progress from this Certificate Introduction course to a 1-year Certificate course with us at Dublin Design Institute will benefit from a reduced fee for the follow-on course. This Certificate Introduction course is a first step into the profession of Graphic Design, providing you with a solid overview of the core principles within this discipline. The course enables you to develop creative skills as well as testing the many areas associated with the discipline. Many of our graduates on this course, progress in to further study options with us and often to the full BA degree programme, further increasing employment prospects in the area of Graphic Design.
Practical Matters
The Institute offers courses in class and online. You are advised to check the mode offering of their preferred course. In the case of online courses, you must have access to a computer or laptop and a good internet connection (Wi-Fi). Online courses are offered through the platform of Microsoft Teams. After successful registration for a course, all students receive the ‘Enrolled Student Information Packs’. This pack includes reading lists, materials lists and any other course specific information or equipment, that may be required.
