Course Description

This comprehensive 10-week course has been developed by experienced fashion industry professionals to help you to understand the expertise needed to work in a Buying office. The aim is to give you an insight into the commercially focused role of a fashion buyer, by investigating the market and forecasted trends to inform the building of a range for a fashion brand.

During the course, you will be introduced to subjects such as trend forecasting and its historical and contemporary influences, customer profiling, brand DNA, market research, range planning using excel and lots more, encompassing industry-standard procedures and professional terminology.

This is an intensive course designed to give you an introduction to contemporary buying practice. You will attend two core classes (day or evening depending on the chosen mode of study).

Course Content
Introduction to Buying & Principles of Buying

Learn about the key reports used in the buying cycle. Analyse fashion brands, and investigate the brand’s current collection to create a shop report to understand the importance of brand identity and how to evaluate the brand DNA, competitor analysis and positioning. Learn the presentation techniques used to build and visually present a fashion range plan in Microsoft excel.

Fashion Trend Forecasting & Customer Profiling

Learn about the impact of fashion trends and how they influence a fashion range and category development. Utilising WGSN, the industry-standard trend forecasting platform, you will learn how to identify micro and macro trends, as well as explore the impact of key historic and contemporary insights influencing the fashion season. You will also gain a clear understanding of customer profiling including the development of your own customer profile.

Buying Reports

You will learn about the key inquiry and reports used in Buying. Investigate a fashion
brand, and understand the importance of brand identity through research and evaluation of a brand’s DNA, competitor positioning and product offering presented in the form of a shop report

The Role of the Buyer

Learn the key processes, demands and qualities associated with the role of a Fashion Buyer.

Trend Analysis and Fashion Cycle

Utilising the industry-standard trend forecasting platform WGSN, you will learn how to research and analyse micro and macro trends and gain an understanding of the fashion cycle and how historical references influence contemporary trends. Present your findings by creating a fashion trend report and trend board.

Customer Profiling

Learn how to select, research, and empathise with your customer to create customer profile based on a particular brand.

Admissions Requirements   

Applicants aged under 23 must have successfully completed the Leaving Certificate/a comparable secondary school examination, or hold another qualification at Level 5 or higher on the National Framework for Qualifications (NFQ). Language Requirements   

We welcome international students to our courses. If English is not your first language, evidence of proficiency is required. This can be provided through the successful completion of a recognised English language test e.g. IELTS/TOEFL/Cambridge Exams/DET. In addition to language test results, the Institute also recognises language qualification by experience e.g., where an individual has been working or studying in English or in an English-speaking environment for a minimum of 12 months.

Certification

Certification Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a DDI-accredited Certificate in Fashion Buying Introduction.

Progression Options  

Upon successful completion of this course, you are eligible to continue their studies, progressing on to the 1 Year Certificate in Fashion Buying. Students who progress from a 10-week course to a 1 Year Certificate course at DDI may benefit from a reduced fee for the follow-on course. Practical Matters      

The Institute offers courses in class and online. You are advised to check the mode offering of their preferred course. In the case of online courses, you must have access to a computer or laptop and a good internet connection (Wi-Fi). Online courses are offered through the platform of Microsoft Teams.

After successful registration for a course, all students receive the ‘Enrolled Student Information Packs’. This pack includes reading lists, materials lists and any other course specific information or equipment, that may be required.
