Course Description
This QQI Accredited course introduces CAD (Computer Aided Design) as a process to create digital design information and technical documentation for projects. The module will introduce digital working environments, software, workflows and allow for development of capabilities across platforms associated with contemporary practice.
The module covers the features, commands and techniques for creating, editing and printing drawings. From the program interface, you will progress to fundamental drawing, editing tools and utilities for precise and accurate drawing. Introducing common practices and tips will allow learners to use CAD efficiently and bring drawings to professional industry standard.

Course Content
The Certificate in CAD 2D course starts at the very beginning, and trains you to use Autodesk’s AutoCAD software to create and amend 2-dimensional drawings. To take the course, you should have a basic knowledge of computers, and be familiar with using basic operating systems to open files, save documents and access drop-down menus.
Dublin Design Institute has provided CAD training to students from various disciplines including engineering, architecture, building services, interior design, retail design, shop-fitting, product design, landscape design, and fashion design, for over 15 years.
Course Content
- Role of CAD & File Management
- Procedures for Workspace Set-Up: workspace, drawing units, options set-up, drawing settings, ribbon & command line
- Use of Tool Bars & Menus
Drawing is integral to design and in these sessions you will become proficient in the following:
- Drawings objects: drawing commands, object properties
- Editing Drawn Information: modifying commands, utilities
- Applying Hatch Patterns
- Isometric Drawing
You will focus on the following aspects of CAD:
- Layers & Layer Properties
- Creating and Inserting Text
- Text, Dimensions & Annotation styles
- Creating and Inserting Blocks
- Dimensioning
- Drawing Template Creation
- Printing Layout Template Creation
- Plotting Drawings
- Importing & Exporting files
Admissions Requirements
Applicants aged under 23 must have successfully completed the Leaving Certificate/a comparable secondary school examination, or hold another qualification at Level 5 or higher on the National Framework for Qualifications (NFQ). Mature applicants are welcome and highly valued at the Institute and can be admitted based on prior learning and work experience. We have a robust Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy in place to support mature learners. Language Requirements
We welcome international students to our courses. If English is not your first language, evidence of proficiency is required. This can be provided through the successful completion of a recognised English language test e.g. IELTS/TOEFL/Cambridge Exams/DET. In addition to language test results, the Institute also recognises language qualification by experience e.g., where an individual has been working or studying in English or in an English-speaking environment for a minimum of 12 months.
Progression Options
This course has been structured to allow students advance their studies with DDI. Upon successful completion of this course, you may progress into our 1 Year Certificate in Interior Design carrying an exemption from studies in CAD. We encourage our students to look at our short courses as a pathway to other options and courses as well as nationally accredited and internationally recognised degree programmes in Interior Design.

Practical Matters
The Institute offers courses in class and online. Students are advised to check the mode offering of their preferred course. In the case of online courses, you must have access to a computer or laptop and a good internet connection (Wi-Fi). Online courses are offered through the platform of Microsoft Teams.
After successful registration for a course, all students receive the ‘Enrolled Student Information Packs’. This pack includes reading lists, materials lists and any other course specific information or equipment, that may be required.
It is imperative that CAD software is installed before the beginning of class. This requires you to setup an account and send details of student status to the software provider. All details are supplied after successful admission.
