6 Week 2D Computer Aided Design (CAD)
Computer Aided Design, or CAD, is an increasingly essential skill for professionals working in a wide a range of industries, including engineering, building services, manufacturing, architecture and interior design. This course will ensure that you have a strong foundation of skills and confidence in using AutoDesk’s AutoCAD software.
This course starts at the very beginning, and trains you to use Autodesk’s AutoCAD software to create and amend 2-dimensional drawings. To take the course, you should have a basic knowledge of computers, and be familiar with using basic operating systems to open files, save documents and access drop-down menus. Assessment of the course includes 2 digital drawing assignments and a theoretical test.
Dublin Design Institute has provided CAD training to students from various disciplines including engineering, architecture, building services, interior design, retail design, shop-fitting, product design, landscape design, and fashion design, for over 15 years.
Navigating the many tools and using the techniques within CAD will help you build a strong workflow process. You will focus on:
- File Management
- Procedures for Set-Up
- Use of Tool Bars
Drawing is integral to design and in these sessions you will become proficient in the following:
- Drawings objects
- Editing Drawn Information
- Isometric Drawing
You will focus on the following aspects of CAD:
- Creating and Inserting Text
- Creating and Inserting Blocks
- Applying Hatch Patterns
- Printing Drawings
The main entry requirement for this course is that applicants must have basic computer skills. You should have a basic knowledge of computers, and be familiar with using basic PC software to open files, save documents and access drop-down menus.
We welcome international students to our courses. If English is not your first language, we recommend a certain level of proficiency in order to succeed and get the most out of this course. Our guideline would be an IELTS or TOEFL language test result of: Level 5.5 in the IELTS Test or a score of 70 on the TOEFL ibT test.
This course has been structured to create and support progression pathways for you in your studies. Upon successful completion of this course, there are many options for you to progress. You could consider an array of courses with us across Fashion, Graphic and Interior Design as well as a diverse range of study and delivery modes part-time, full-time, online and in-class. A popular one with CAD graduates is often our 10-week Associate Certificate in Interior Design.
We encourage our students to look at short courses as stepping stone options to other courses including nationally accredited, internationally recognised degree programmes.

As some of our courses are online and others in-class/onsite, please make sure you have checked this specifically for the course that you are interested in.
Once you have registered for any course, additional information will be provided to you in our ‘Enrolled Student Information Packs’. This pack includes reading lists, materials lists and any other course specific information or equipment that may be required. For courses taking place online, please make sure you have access to a computer or laptop, Wi-Fi and that you can access Microsoft Teams.
