10 Week Associate Certificate in Graphic Design

Course Description

This popular 10-week course will introduce you to the core principles of graphic design. Topics covered include illustration, concept development, typography, poster design, logo design and branding. During the course you will learn the basics of industry-standard design software Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.  

Course Content

Enthusiastic, practising designers will guide you through the principles of graphic design, and you will learn to deliver unique and original solutions to contemporary design briefs, including typographic and rebrand work.

Our class sizes are limited, ensuring that you receive high levels of direct feedback, engagement and interaction with our lecturers.

This course is ideal if you are interested in Graphic Design and keen to learn more; if you are considering a career change, or undertaking training as part of continued professional development (CPD), or if you would like to enhance your current skills and knowledge in this discipline.

This is a challenging course in which you will learn to develop imaginative design work, as well as a broad range of graphic design skills. If you are solely interested in gaining software skills, please consider our Certificate in Adobe Software for Beginners.

 

Course Content
Creative Thinking & Visual Recording

You will be introduced, through a series of techniques and tutorials, to the process to record, evaluate and ideas through visual means, namely using sketchbooks and drawing. You will be shown ow to visual record your research and challenged to look at the world around in you through the eyes of a designer.

Typography

You will explore typographic anatomy, form, alignment and composition in this part of teh course which will result in you developing, through analogue techniques, a new typeface for your portfolio.

Image-making

Through a series of design briefs you will be encouraged to build upon and develop your ability to solve problems through visual executions, using a variety of mixed media techniques. This will allow you to consider the vast array of media available to designers for visual problem-solving.

Branding

You will investigate modern branding practice and begin to understand the principles in terms of flexible brand solutions. You will work on a project that allows you to develop your own brand identity in the context of a given brief.

Software Skills (Adobe Creative Suite)

Understanding how to digitise your work is a vital part of contemporary design practice. You will be shown, through a series of tutorials how to achieve professional results using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. While the software is explored, it must be noted that this course focuses on developing design ability and is not a software training course. Our Certificate in Beginners Adobe course is purely for those seeking to enhance their software skills.

Admissions requirements

Applicants aged under 23 must have successfully completed the Leaving Cert / comparable secondary school examination, or hold another qualification at Level 5 or higher on the National Framework for Qualifications (NFQ).

Language Requirements

We welcome international students to our courses. If English is not your first language, evidence of proficiency is required. This can be provided through an IELTS or TOEFL language test: Level 5.5 in the IELTS Test or a score of 70 on the TOEFL ibT test.

Certification

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a QQI Level 5 Component Certificate in Graphic Design (5N1978).

Please note that a valid PPS (Personal Public Service) number is required by QQI for certification.

Progression Options

We encourage our students to look at our short courses as pathway options to nationally accredited and internationally recognised degree programmes.
