1 Year Certificate in Fashion Design

Course Description

This comprehensive 1-year course has been developed by experienced fashion industry professionals to give you a thorough understanding of the position and knowledge needed to work as a designer in the Fashion industry.

Through lectures and practical workshops, you will develop both design and manufacturing skills associated with fashion design. You will learn to follow a design process, taking your ideas from concept to final design and develop knowledge of industry as it is today and understand how it has developed over the centuries. You will gain an insight into fashion design, starting with trend analysis, customer profiling, visual research, design development, presentation board and illustrations while building your own fashion design portfolio of work.

During term 2 you will begin to learn about fundamentals of textile design, pattern drafting and garment manufacture from textile research and development, block construction, pattern drafting, basic sewing techniques and finishing details of a garment. Alongside these practical classes you will continue to develop your design skills through a design and textile project. Pattern drafting and garment construction continue throughout the year, allowing you to build the skill and confidence to bring your designs from 2D design to 3D garments.

You will learn the practical skills required to work in the industry including digital presentation skills for fashion design, using industry-standard software Adobe Illustrator to create flat drawings, illustrations, and learn to present your work to a professional standard.

In term 3 you undertake the manufacture of your design you created during term 2 by pattern drafting, cutting, and manufacturing a toile and create a final garment. You will develop knowledge of a career in industry as it stands today.

At the end of the year, you will have a fashion design portfolio along with patterns and toiles and will have created your own garment design.

The course consists of lectures, studio sessions and is assessed through project-based assignments and presentations.
